Reinvigorating mystery
Weekly nuggets of pain science news and insight, usually 100-300 words, with the occasional longer post. The blog is the “director’s commentary” on the core content of PainScience.com: a library of major articles and books about common painful problems and popular treatments. Dr. Robert Sapolsky, from his classic book, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers:
“Science is not meant to cure us of mystery, but to reinvent & reinvigorate it.”
I really enjoy that thought, and yet I don’t actually entirely agree with it. There is so much mystery that science cannot and will never “cure” us of all of it, and it would be a shame if it did. Certainly one of the main things I want from science is to expose deeper mysteries (and I often get it). But if it didn’t cure at least some of it, what would be the damn point? 😜
