A tragic death is a reminder that unnecessary tests have the potential to cause harm

PainSci notes
A well-written story of the tragic death by an allergic reaction to the contrast agent used for a clearly unnecessary MRI scan — the patient wasn't even trying to find the cause of a problem. Admittedly, this is an extremely rare cause of death. As dangerous as anaphylactic shock reactions are, they are rarely lethal, and it was exotic complications that killed the patient several days later. Nevertheless, it emphasizes that almost no medical procedure is risk free, and even scans have risks that need to be clinically justified.
