Why Perfectionists Get More Shin Splints

PainSci notes
Runners with “perfectionist tendencies” are 17 times more likely to get injured, which seems rather odd and suspiciously psychological. (Based on an unpublished study.) Stress fractures aren’t psychosomatic … right? It’s not that kind of stress! “Still, for anyone who’s been around runners,” says sports science journalist Alex Hutchinson, “it’s not hard to believe that there are some personality traits that are associated with injury risk.” Indeed.
It’s probably just that perfectionists push themselves harder. Perfectionism is a proxy for stereotypical athletic ambition: intense, driven, a bit reckless, likely to ignore warning signs.
